Domestic car sales ranking in October: Toyota Yaris regained the top spot after 15 months, as production resumed and sales rebounded

The Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA) and the National Light Automobile Association (NALA) announced the domestic new car sales data by model in October on the 7th. Toyota’s Yaris model topped the sales list again after 15 months. This is due to the resumption of production of the Yaris Cross in September, which was suspended due to non-compliance issues in June, and sales have gradually recovered.

Yaris sales in October were 16,830 units, up 6% year-on-year. Due to certification non-compliance issues, Yaris sales in July fell 38% year-on-year, but sales quickly recovered as production resumed.

Honda’s light vehicle N-BOX ranked second. Affected by the release of new models last year, sales this month fell 27% year-on-year to 16,821 units. Toyota’s Corolla ranked third, with sales of 14,865 units, up 26% year-on-year. The derivative versions of the model, “Corolla Fielder” and “Corolla Axio”, also resumed production in September, helping sales growth.

Electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for 1.3% of total passenger car sales, down 0.7 percentage points from the same period last year, and sales fell 35% year-on-year to 4,325 units. Nissan’s light electric vehicle “Sakura” sales fell 52% year-on-year to 1,448 units, which had an impact on the overall decline in EV sales.
